Located in the northwest corner of Africa, directly across from Spain, Morocco is a country like no other. While the great Sahara Desert covers part of it, it’s not all sandy beige landscape. The 10-day trip will show that while there are golden sand dunes, you’ll also find lush green valleys, that 12th century Almohade architecture co-exist with Art Deco buildings in the city. Throughout the itinerary, you will have the opportunity to explore historic buildings, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, stunning natural landscapes, medinas, and souks.
The trip begins at the country’s capital in Rabat after you cross the Strait of Gibraltar from Spain. From there, you’ll travel to Casablanca and Marrakech, with its modern and historic buildings, impressive mosques and colourful medinas. Leave the buzzing cities to cross the High Atlas mountain range and reach Ait Ben Haddou, a ksar or fortified village from the 11th century that’s as cinematic as they come (yes, they’ve shot a lot of period films there). More dramatic landscapes await at the Valley of the Roses, Todra Gorges, and Ziz River Valley as you make your way to the oasis town of Erfoud in the Sahara Desert and then to Morocco’s cultural and religious capital, Fès. No trip to Fès is complete without a visit to the Medina, the city’s ancient quarter. A World Heritage Site, its labyrinthine streets reveal lively souks, mosques, fountains, and the famous tanneries.
