This 5-day rail journey shows you how much it’s all true as you feast your eyes on it from your train window or when you settle into your hotel. Your introduction to Switzerland starts off at Zermatt, a car-free picturesque village at the foot of the mighty Matterhorn mountain. The next day, you get to take the Gornegrat Bahn, a cogwheel railway that brings passengers up to Gornegrat, a mountain ridge considered by many as a starting point for alpine hikes. But if you’d rather just stay at the viewing platform, you’ll be rewarded by the sight of 29 peaks rising above 4,000 meters and several glaciers.

As if that wasn’t impressive enough, you get to board the Glacier Express the following day. The 8-hour rail journey, considered one of the best in the world, takes you across 291 bridges, 91 tunnels and across the Oberalp Pass to reach St. Moritz. Spend an entire day at your leisure in the sunny mountain resort, which has been the playground of the rich and famous. You can try some of its hiking routes or ski resorts, but if shopping and art is more your thing, there’s also a shopping street and museums. You get a mix of unspoilt nature and cosmopolitan charm in this memorable rail holiday.
